A great one-day Carthage and Sidi Bou Said tour

We did a 1 day Carthage and Sidi Ben Said tour with our guide Anas. Booking process was smooth, price very good, communication excellent. The guide was wonderful, kind and knowledgeable. We learnt a lot about Tunisia past and present. Great tour

Knowledgeable guide, but logistics need work

This was a booking for a 3 hour guided walking tour around the Carthage ruins just outside Tunis. The booking was easy and with good communication via WhatsApp, but then the assigned guide wanted to change the start time which wouldn’t have worked for the group. Then the owner found a new guide, and all seemed well. We were clearly told in a WhatsApp message that entry fees were included ($4 each, the tour cost $19 each, so not a trivial proportion of the cost) but when we arrived at the start point, the new guide said we had to pay. It took about 15 minutes of heated calls and eventually we all paid with the promise of a refund. The guide was good, but clearly not very well prepared. At one point he asked us if we wanted to see the amphitheater, which was clearly on the itinerary. A couple of times he left us to wander around sites on our own, while other groups were getting much more detailed explanations. At the last site, he called us together after about 10 minutes and announced the tour was finished, and proceeded to leave us about 15 minutes before the advertised end time. So together with the delayed start, leaving the group to their own devices, and finishing early, it did not feel great as all in all we had probably about 2 hours guided, rather than 3 as advertised. I have to say, the guide was very knowledgeable and charismatic, but clearly wasn’t well briefed. There were 8 of us, colleagues on a work trip. I really want to support local independent operators, but these guys need to up their game a bit - the groups going round from bigger tour operators were clearly getting a better and more coherent guided experience.

Great day out

Abdelkarim was very knowledgeable and a great person. He's been a guide for many years (since the late 1980's) and he does tours around the world. You can ask him deeper questions about Carthage and he'll be happy to share more. I watched a really nice overview before going and it helped me connect more deeply with what I was experiencing and gave great conversation topics: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6dbdVhVSat8. He has a lot of stamina, so you'll want to try to keep up (with the correct footwear) :-). To be fair, he asked if his walking was too fast multiple times, but we wanted to get some exercise. By nature, Ancient Roman Carthage is quite spread out. You'll take a taxi from the "colosseum" area to the baths. From the baths you'll typically walk to the ancient Carthaginian port, but you can also take a taxi. We would 100% recommend doing a tour with him.
